0.2.3 - Spongebob/Plankton Update, New Boss, Balance Changes
Super Brawl Showdown! » Devlog
This update adds quite a bit to the game. it introduces alternate colors, new music for several stages, new movesets for two fighters (Spongebob and Plankton), and two new playable fighters. In addition, a lot of balance changes were made, and additional moves were given to two fighters (Classic Timmy and Sheen). I'm going to be honest here and say I'm way too tired to write a summary, so just take a gander at the full list for more details. Oh, and there is also a new boss available.
Linux update will be added when I get more space from itch.io.
General Changes
- Alternate colors have been added. Press Q while previewing a fighter to switch between alternate colors. As of right now, only Classic Spongebob and Fanboy have alternate colors.
- Horde Mode counter has been made more visually distinct.
- There will only be one defeated Horde Mode enemy at a time.
- The series emblem for Spongebob Squarepants has been changed. (Special thanks to ChosenMii.)
- Bessie Higgenbottom will now appear on Pier 31 when not selected as a character. (Special thanks to Nicky.)
- Added 8 new songs to various stages. (Songs appear on Krusty Krab, Fairy World, Amity Park, Jellyfish Fields, Carnival, Goo Lagoon, Flying Dutchman's Ship, Chum Bucket, Sandy's Treedome, Hall of Heroes, Future Amity Park, Kelp Forest, and Mawgu Lair)
Fighter Changes
- Balance and Visual changes made to Classic Spongebob.
- Classic Spongebob now has two new alternate colors.
- Classic Spongebob's super special move can now hit up to two times instead of three, and the damage has been reduced slightly. The knockback of the move has also been doubled to make up for it.
- Balance changes made to Fanboy.
- Fanboy now has two new alternate colors.
- Fanboy's Attack stat has been reduced from 12 to 10.
- Fanboy's combo threshold has been increased from 9 to 10.75.
- The hitstun of Fanboy's first two punches has been slightly increased.
- Fanboy's standing kick now launches opponents who are either falling or on the ground.
- The range covered by Fanboy's Valiant Dash has been increased significantly. The damage has also been increased.
- The hitstun of Fanboy's super special move has been reduced, but the knockback has increased greatly. The projectiles will hit up to two times for far away enemies (80% of the screen away or more), and up to three times for closer enemies.
- Balance changes and new moves added to Classic Timmy.
- Classic Timmy's jump animation is now slightly faster.
- Classic Timmy's acceleration increased and gravity reduced.
- Classic Timmy's standing kick now has more knockback. The timer allowing Timmy to perform a standing kick after jumping has been reduced.
- Classic Timmy can now cancel into his specials from his standing kick.
- Classic Timmy's down aerial kick has become his down aerial punch. This has created a new series of combos where Timmy's down punch can be cancelled into his aerial punches mid-kick, creating unique angles of attack.
- Classic Timmy's neutral aerial kick has become his down aerial kick. It also now has a larger window for canceling into punches.
- Classic Timmy has a new, short-ranged, melee neutral aerial kick that makes it easier to string combos.
- Gave Classic Timmy an additional aerial punch that is triggered after punching through an opponent to the other side; allowing him to swing back around and keep punching in the opposite direction.
- Minor slowdown effect applied to Timmy's third punch on miss/whiff.
- Classic Timmy's down special launches slightly higher.
- Classic Timmy's snake projectile has a new sound effect and is now animated.
- Audio changes made to Otis.
- Otis now has two different hurt sounds. (Special thanks to Joshuashadow.)
- Audio changes, Balance changes, and new moves added to Sheen Estevez.
- Reduced the cooldown time between uses of Sheen's standing kick. Sheen's hurtbox size for his standing kick was also increased.
- Sheen's aerial kick has an improved hurtbox (increased side and one frame longer), as well as a faster animation.
- Sheen now has an Ultra Variant of his aerial kick. Hold down while using the kick to activate it at the cost of 10% of Sheen's Ultra meter.
- Sheen now has an Ultra Variant of his punch combo. Press down + back + punch to trigger it at the cost of 30% of Sheen's Ultra Meter.
- Reduced the size of Sheen's hitbox during his first punch.
- Changed the sound of Sheen's super special rocket landing.
- Massive moveset rework made to Spongebob.
- Spongebob can now air block. This allows him to perform his third punch and down special while in the air.
- Spongebob now starts off holding his Jellyfish Friend. His moves change depending on whether or not he is holding his Jellyfish Friend. The jellyfish can be thrown out to deal passive damage around the stage; and can be retrieved with a Jellyfishing Net.
- Spongebob's kick and aerial kick are empowered when holding the jellyfish. (Effects still in development.)
- Spongebob now has slower punches while holding the jellyfish. His down/third punch can only be used when the jellyfish is thrown.
- Spongebob's third punch has increased knockback and a longer cooldown, making it serve better as a combo ender or as a way to push the opponent off of you.
- Spongebob's neutral special is now either Jellyfish Throw (Held) or Jellyfishing Net (Thrown).
- Spongebob gains a Bubble Buddy up special while holding his Jellyfish Friend. Currently does no damage.
- Spongebob's previous down special can now only be performed while the jellyfish is thrown.
- The animation for Spongebob's super special has been made more smooth. He now uses his Super Brawl 2 super special sound effects instead of Plankton's as a placeholder.
- Spongebob's original super special can now only be triggered while not holding the jellyfish. Holding the jellyfish while performing a super special is planned to be a king jellyfish summon, but is still in development. Currently, it activates a timer and nothing else.
- Massive moveset rework made to Plankton.
- Plankton's fighter icon edited slightly to make the line under his eye look less like a weird mouth.
- Plankton's standing kick is now much faster, and can be used to cancel into his punches.
- Plankton's down kick is now his down punch. It can be cancelled by pressing the punch button again, or by cancelling into a special.
- Plankton no longer has a long cooldown after throwing six punches. This was implemented before the knockdown state system; which now prevents his punches from becoming an infinite.
- Plankton's aerial special now drops a Planktopolis statue from above. It deals damage on contact, and again three more times as it crumbles into the ground. Using the move thrusts Plankton upwards.
- Slightly modified the animation for Plankton's neutral special, the Chum Bucket Bucket Helmet.
- Plankton's down special, Computer Wife/Karen, now spawns on the opposite side of the screen. She knocks enemies within Plankton's melee range, and has her own voice lines.
- Plankton's 'Dennis' super special has been replaced with 'Imperial Invasion'; a more fitting move that can deal up to three devastating blows with various machines of war. The old super special will be re-added as an assist in a future update.
- Plankton's projectiles can now hit while the opponent is still in hitstun from a previous ranged attack (an effect typically only applied to melee attacks).
- Kitty Katswell is now available as a playable fighter.
- Minor visual changes have been made to a few animations fixing Kitty's lazy eye.
- Visual changes made to Chum Chum.
- Fanboy, Chum Chum's Companion character, will no longer appear in fights against Fanboy.
- Punching Bag is now available as a playable fighter.
- Increased the height of Punching Bag's aerials.
Tournament Mode Changes
- Increased the score yield from breaking bottles from 50 to 75.
- Vortian Suit Santa is a new boss that can now be encountered in the final round.
- King Neptune's Trident Thrust aims slightly higher than before.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed a bug where fighters who had HP below 1.15 displayed the HP as 0.
- Fixed a bug where you could sometimes see the edge of the round number graphic after it had exited.
- Fixed a bug where Classic Spongebob's AI would spam Typhoon Kick while knocked down.
- Fixed a bug where Fanboy's Valiant Counter would trigger but not deal damage.
- Fixed a bug that allows Fanboy to cancel out of his Valiant Dash using Hero's Drop Kick and not expend any charges.
- Fixed a bug that caused Sheen's effects to linger as semi-invisible objects in the background.
- Fixed a bug where cancelling into Patrick's neutral special from his standing kick would increase speed.
- Fixed a bug where Plankton's second punch will sometimes lower his deceleration if timed right.
- Fixed a bug where the player could not break bottles in Tournament Mode if facing left.
- Fixed a bug where Endless Tourney does not allow you to continue after exhausting every possible fighter.
